Kris Allen becomes the eighth American Idol

It's launched the careers of such luminaries as Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and, erm, Blake Lewis, and now Kris Allen is the eighth ever American Idol.

After over 100 million votes were counted, it was revealed that the 23-year-old all-American-boy from Arkansas had beat firm favourite Adam Lambert to the title.

"I'm sorry, I don't even know what to feel right now. This is crazy," he said on hearing the verdict. "It feels good, but Adam deserves this."

All eyes might have been on Kris, but the show had a few other attractions jostling for a bit of the glory, including Queen, Keith Urban, Black Eyed Peas, Cyndi Lauper, Carlos Santana and Rod Stewart.
