Levi Johnston has a Bristol Palin tattoo

Now, for the British among you: in case you missed it, John McCain has chosen some mad woman to potentially be the next Vice President of the United States.

Her name is Sarah Palin. She's 44 years old, she's the governor of Alaska and she looks like a sexy librarian. She likes hunting, creationism, drilling for oil and acting like she knows what she's doing. She hates abortion, gay marriage and Barack Obama.

Sarah is married to Todd Palin. They have five children - and here were four of them being thrown to the hounds on stage with her at the Republican convention this week. They are, from left to right, Track (no, really), Bristol (no, really), Trig (no, really, in Sarah's arms) and Willow (no, really).

And holding 17-year-old Bristol's hand there is her boyfriend Levi Johnston - whose name seems quite normal by these standards, doesn't it? - who's a 18-year-old ice hockey player, and who scrubs up quite nicely, in a young-John-Mayer sort of way.

But I digress. Because the real issue here - well, aside from the whole who's-going-to-lead-the-free-world thing - is that holding hands can get you pregnant. No, wait! It's too late for that. Because Bristol is already pregnant. With Levi's child. And they're about to be frogmarched down the aisle as a result. Because that sort of happy, well-thought-through union doesn't make a mockery of marriage, does it?

Anyway, ahead of these nuptials: on Wednesday night it was clear to see (through certain telephoto-lensed cameras) that Levi has had the word 'Bristol' tattooed across his wedding ring finger. In a nice flowery font.

Now, I'm not sure if Levi's tattoo is a) a sign of commitment, b) the result of a direct order from Sarah Palin and the RNC, or c) a homage to the great British city of Bristol, home to the Clifton suspension bridge and a fine university. Did Levi once visit the South West of England and get a bit drunk, finishing the night off with some spontaneous body ink? I think we should be told.
