'Do I have to stand next to her?': Carla Bruni meets Mrs Gordon Brown

I used to hate it at school. There you were, geek of the century, and teacher made you stand next to the most gorgeous girl in your year, for the annual school photo.

Imagine Sarah Brown's horror then, when she realised that instead of the crusty old politicians she usually has to meet at Downing Street, she has to hang out with the French President's new missus: Carla Bruni - supermodel, aristocrat and all round babe.

And not only that, Carla is beautifully dressed in a stunning purple coat and looks like a one woman style dream.

Bless Sarah for her attempt at a trendy suit, but it just doesn't really work. I mean what ARE those things on her shoulder?

I'd be the same - in fact most women on Earth would struggle to compete with Ms Bruni.
Carla's outfits for her first state visit have been stunningly sophisticated - perfect works of style and decorum. She has, it seems, put Sarkozy on the international style map.
The only downside is that she's making us Brits look like a pile of frumps!
