Britney Spears sued by Louis Vuitton
Signs That Your Career Has Gone Downhill, No.12: Instead of sending you loads of free stuff, a designer sues you for damaging their image.
And that's exactly what luxury French designer label Louis Vuitton has done to Britney Spears.. or at least: her record company, its parent company and MTV Online. And what's more, they've sued successfully.
The case revolves around the video to Britney's 2005 "hit" Do Something. In the vid, Britney drives a pink Hummer floating on make-believe clouds (a fact which I'm surprised Hummer buyers haven't sued her for - surely they can't really float?). One shot shows Britney's fingers drumming on the Hummer's dashboard... which is covered with what looks like Vuitton's 'cherry blossoms' design: dark pink blossoms on a pale pink, web-like background, embossed with the 'LV' logo. Oops.
Cue the LV-clad suits getting very shirty indeed, claiming that this was a breach of counterfeiting laws - and a court case which they've just won. Accusing Britney's people of an "attack" on Louis Vuitton's brands, they've won substantial damages against Sony BMG and MTV, and had the offending video removed from the internet.
